![]() ![]() ![]() Unfortunately, the film is overloaded with noise, hysteria and rage which, though well aligned with the painful stage of life these girls are going through, tend to exhaust through their excesses (a marked departure from the simplicity Cortés opted for in his acclaimed film Buried ). Their approach does, however, create a definite charged atmosphere in the unique setting where the action unfolds: namely a boarding school set apart from the rest of the world, which welcomes a small group of pupils – young girls who have been selected for their artistic qualities and talents – and which is ruled over by a very strict headmistress, to whom a glacial Uma Thurman lends her unmistakably angular features. ![]() Cortés stresses the efforts made by the crew to ensure the fire we see in the movie is real and not computer generated, which complicated the filming process somewhat: the team spent half the shoot wearing protective masks to stop them breathing in toxic fumes. The film is swamped with special effects, developed under the supervision of Alex Villagrasa. ![]() ![]() ![]() I found the lessons of chapters 5 & 9 particularly impactful. ![]() Each chapter opens with a compelling story that serves as a springboard for the main point of the chapter (Epstein is an especially adept storyteller). Both specialization and range are necessary for human progress and fulfillment, but-as Epstein illustrates over the course of his book-range is uniquely positioned in the Information Age as a way to inject newfound creativity and outsized results for those who embrace it. Whereas hyperspecialization suggests a linear path from A to B, the narrative of range is more complex and circuitous, filled with detours and cul-de-sacs. Epstein contrasts this with “range,” an alternative approach that integrates knowledge from multiple domains. Hyperspecialization is the idea that a singular-focus combined with deliberate practice is the optimal path to success in a given field. ![]() Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World by David Epstein (2019) is a thoughtful counterpoint to the narrative that success is best achieved through hyperspecialization. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her second book, Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia, is a history of Polynesian voyaging.
